LONG RANGE LASER SCANNERS: MOVING TOWARDS A HYBRID TOOL OR A HYBRID METHODOLOGY?

ABSTRACT
This paper proposes two solutions to the problem of the metric error propagation generated by the laser scanner. The first is a hybrid methodology which adapts the methodology of total station to the GS 100 scanner system for the collection of site data. The second solution involves a physical adaptation of the GS scanner, in order to create a hybrid machine where the GS 100 scanner and Total Station would be integrated into one machine. Both solutions aim to give a closed network bound to one reference point (world 1), which overcomes the limitations of the traditional method which relies solely on targets with a known geometry or common identifiable planes or points for integrating scans. The hybrid methodology is applicable with the present-day GS 100 scanner. This paper explains the concept behind the hybrid methodology in order to put forward its proposals for future developments in the GS 100 scanner, for the creation of the hybrid machine. This data acquisition system is applicable for surveying a wide range of sites, from monuments to small and large, complex sites.
