St. George’s Square Concept Development
PROJECT ARCHITECT CLAUDE BORG
2015 | Arch-con Atelier
The design concept took into consideration the historic developments and needs of the Square, in the past and today. The proposal, addressed these various issues.
• The importance of water and a fountain in the Square
• The importance of presenting the Place as a whole square and not as a Square with a road segmenting the Square into two pieces. The research gathered from various sources as seen above, including established books such as ‘City by an Order’ and many others, clearly identify the concept of Valletta as having a grid iron pattern, with all Auberges having a square in front of their main facades.
• The proposal also considers the removal of all the present cars, and other derogatory activities.
• The importance of today’s multi use cannot be overlooked. On one hand, the concept of the Square as a square, to enjoy, and appreciate in an interactive way. The fountain shall be an attractive feature for both old and young.
• However, the importance of the Square as a place for parades cannot absolutely be overlooked.
• The importance of the Sette Giugno also cannot be overlooked. Part of the proposal includes the shifting of the Sette Giugno monument.
Legibility of the city. Design: a compromise between respecting the past by the proposed the fountain and retaining the openness of the Square as it has been transmitted to us. The Square shall be capable of retaining the official functions, it has always historically done.
