Malta's secret tunnels: inside the newly discovered underworld of Valletta

"Claude Borg was the architect in charge of the car park project, which was scrapped after this discovery. Borg had removed a jumble of heavy limestone blocks in the basement of an Italian restaurant on Archbishop Street and found a passageway to Valletta’s first freshwater fountain. There are rumours, he said, that the Knights built escape tunnels from the palace. “I can also tell you that this tunnel connects to the palace. If there was a secret escape route, this was it.”"

"Borg was the first to step foot into the cistern since the second world war. Repaving works on Republic Street had broken through Great Siege Square, and he was called in to assess the damage. "

Libyan Antiquities head visits Malta Centre for Restoration

“Architect Claude Borg, the assistant director responsible for the Documentation Division, together with other members of his team, greeted Dr Al Chadouri and Mr Turjaman and demonstrated the use of MCR's two laser scanners. During their July visit to Libya, Dr Cannataci and Mr Schirò had met the Head of Documentation and Archives of the Department of Antiquities, Dr Abdullah Al Mahmoudy, who was very interested in the possibility of MCR's Documentation Division providing training to the Department of Antiquities in the application of laser scanning technology.”
